How We Are Different

We offer an exceptional level of professionalism and experience. Dr. Hand has been practicing dentistry in New Bern since 1981. With patients originally seen by Dr. Hand's grandfather and father, we have doctor-patient relationships that truly span generations. Our staff averages 26 years apiece of dental office experience and 15 years with Dr. Hand. Simply put, we know what we are doing and do it well. We stay current on the latest materials and techniques by frequently attending courses, lectures, and seminars presented by the best in their fields. Dr. Hand is a fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, a distinguishment earned through a rigorous examination and extensive post-graduate education.

As one would expect, long term relationships with our patients are a core component of our practice. We get to know you, and you get to know us. If you have a problem, we'll be here for you. Our success depends upon treating people well. We are proud to say that our number one source of new patients is by recommendation of current patients.

For many people, going to the dentist is not their favorite thing to do. We understand those feelings and strive to make your experience as pleasant as possible. In our office, we strongly feel that communication is the single most important factor in assuring a positive experience. Here are some common reasons that people avoid the dentist, and an explanation of how your experience at our office will put you at ease.

"I'm afraid to go the dentist"
This is a common fear for many reasons, and one for which we will never make you feel embarrassed. Talking about what makes you uncomfortable, or previous unpleasant experiences, can help us provide comfortable treatment and avoid repeating a bad experience. There are many ways to help you relax and receive pain-free care. We promise to listen to your concerns and together decide how to best insure your comfort.

"It hurts"
We have available many techniques to make your visit to our office very pleasant. We will review all your options with you before any treatment begins to make sure that you have a good experience here. You may be surprised by how comfortable modern dentistry can be.

"My doctor doesn't really listen to me, and then tells me what has to be done with no explanation." Unfortunately, we hear this a lot, and strive to make sure this is not our patients' experience. We give you our undivided attention to learn your concerns, and provide you with the knowledge to decide a course of treatment that best fits your needs.

 "It's expensive"
We will work with you to help you select a treatment plan that fits your budget. Sometimes treatment can be phased over a period of time. We also offer financing plans that allow you to stretch out payments over many months. We invite you to ask questions, and we will review all financial options with you in detail before any treatment begins.

"I feel guilty or embarrassed about my teeth"
We see ourselves as educators. We want to explain needed treatment to you so that you feel positive and motivated to pursue excellent oral health. We will not dwell on the past, but instead look to the opportunities you have in the future to enjoy the benefits of optimal oral health.

"It takes too much time"
We promise to respect your time by preparing you in advance for the length of your appointment, and by seeing you as closely to your appointed time as humanly possible. We want to give you the best possible care in the least amount of time.
